Laurence Griffiths

British photographer, Laurence Griffiths, has had a deep admiration for sports since he was a child. Growing up, Laurence’s uncle was a talented sports photographer, but it was only after his uncle won an award for a spectacular image taken at the 1987 FA Cup Final, that a career in sports photography grabbed Laurence’s attention. From there, his uncle taught him the basics, taking Laurence to Nottingham Forest football matches, where he gave him an old Nikon FM2, a 180mm 2.8 manual focus lens, and a few rolls of film at each game.
I have been shooting with Nikon cameras for over 20 years. My first camera was a Nikon FM2 with a motor drive - it made such a reassuring noise. Nikon has provided me with the tools that have helped shape my career in sports photography, allowing me to deliver incredible shots of defining moments.
Sports photography is all about these moments, and most happen in the blink of an eye. As a sports photographer, I have to deliver in a high-pressure industry, so it’s imperative that I can rely on my tools. My most recent camera, the Nikon Z 9, delivers the ultimate combinations of speed and accuracy, and Nikon has always offered me an extensive range of lenses to get the job done in any situation. The process of using Nikon’s gear has become second nature, almost an extension of me.
