French fine art photographer Mathilde Oscar has spent the past 14 years building a body of work that sits at the intersection of photography, painting, and visual storytelling.

My camera has always felt more like a paintbrush. I think in composition, light, and symbolism, the way a painter builds a scene on canvas.

Nikon became part of my journey at a moment when my work was reaching new audiences. It opened doors to a creative community I hadn't expected to find.

Mathilde Oscar
Mathilde Oscar's path into photography was not a conventional one. Trained in Art History and drawn first to painting, she came to the camera not as a technical instrument but as a means of bringing painted visions to life. In 2013, she began a series reimagining fairy tales with the ambition of creating a large-scale exhibition and a book, and it was through that project that photography became her primary medium for world-building. Her influences remain rooted in the history of art, from Renaissance masters and Pre-Raphaelite painters to Symbolist artists, and she cites Eugenio Recuenco and Annie Leibovitz as photographers whose cinematic sensibility she admires. Nikon entered her journey in 2023, approaching her after she had already established a distinctive visual identity and a loyal audience. What drew her to the Nikon ecosystem was not equipment alone, but the opportunity to connect with a wider creative community through events, conferences, and shared creative dialogue. As a Nikon Creator, she continues to develop her artistic practice while sharing her experience and pushing her signature vision of photography as a timeless, painterly art form.
